"The American, Latin American, and Caribbean region still has a high prevalence of violence against women and girls. Still in the world, behind 16 years old, they are still 50 percent of them are attacked sexually. We have women in the region that are 40 percent victims of physical violence, 50 percent victims of psychological violence. And in some parts unfortunately of Central America every day two women die because of femicide. So we need to do much more, we need to prevent and eradicate, we know what works, we need to continue doing that."

STORYLINE:

Morales congratulated the UN for organizing the campaign Unite to End Violence Against Women and noted that "the Bolivian people have implemented several policies to defend women and also to increase their political participation".

Morales and his team ended up beating the UN Development Programme's all-stars 10 goals to 5.

The match was organized by President Morales and Heraldo Muñoz, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.  It supports Bolivia's Year to End all forms of Violence against Women and Girls as well as the UN campaign, advocating for the issue globally and in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet noted that the region has some of the world's highest rates of gender-based crimes.

Violence against women takes many forms – physical, sexual, psychological and economic, with patterns often being passed down through the generations. Some types of violence, such as trafficking, cross national boundaries, according to UN studies.

In 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, nearly 50 percent of women said they had been victims of at least one sexual assault during their lifetime, according to a recent World Bank study. And nearly 70 percent of physical abuses were committed by the victim's own partners.

Moreover, Central America has one of the highest rates of female murders (gendercide) worldwide. In Guatemala and El Salvador there were 675 and 580 respectively in 2010 while Honduras registered 312 in 2008.

Abuse also takes place in the work place. In Latin America and the Caribbean 30 to 50 percent of women have suffered some type of sexual harassment while at work. In Brazil a survey in 12 cities revealed that more than half of women have suffered some kind of harassment at work whereas in Mexico the number reaches 70 percent of women.

UNDP works with governments and civil society organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to empower women, prevent, address and respond to violence against women.
