STORYLINE:

The top UN development official is currently on a four-day visit to the fragile West African nation of Cote d'Ivoire.

The Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark yesterday (13 September) met with the country's President, Alassane Ouattara.

During their meeting Clark urged President Ouattara to have Cote d'Ivoire lead among the ECOWAS countries, and encouraged his economic and public sector reform programme. Clark used the opportunity to recommit UNDP's support to the development of Cote D'Ivoire.

Today (14 September) Clark met Guillaume Soro, the President of the National Assembly with whom she covered issues ranging from reconciliation, disarmament,  demobilization and reintegration issues for former combatants as well as the Parliament being responsive to that process.

Later in the day she met with Charles Konan Banny, President of Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation Commission, with whom she discussed the way in which the commission is implementing its mandate as well as the need to establish the facts around what happened and address how to stop that from ever occurring again.

The UN Security Council established a UN peacekeeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) in 2004 to facilitate the peace process in the country, which was split by civil war in 2002 into a rebel-held north and Government-controlled south.

In the aftermath of the post-election violence that followed the 2010 presidential polls, the peacekeeping mission is assisting the West African country with a number of key tasks, including the restoration of law and order, national reconciliation, the holding of legislative elections, and economic recovery.
