STORYLINE:

In the midst of an economic crisis which has affected young people, the United Nations celebrates the 13th annual International Youth Day this Sunday (12 August).

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for greater and more meaningful inclusion of youth into decision-making processes around the world, while also warning of a possible "lost generation" if urgent measures are not put in place.

Young visitors at United Nations Headquarters offered their views on the challenges faced by their generation.

Vincent Dekimpe, a 26 year-old law student from Belgium, said that not every country is affected in the same way by the economic downturn, but added that young people are rightfully "frustrated about the future."

Hyun-jeong Lee from the Republic of Korea said that in the current economic climate "so many people want to get a job, but it's very difficult."

According to the Secretary-General's message with the occasion of International Youth Day "a large number have no immediate prospects and are disenfranchised from the political, social and development processes in their countries," which has led to massive protest movements from Wall Street, to Greece to the Middle East.

Katrin Spiller, a 16 year-old visitor from Germany, sided with the protestors and said "if our generation wants to achieve something we have to work for it." She noted that her generation will one day be in charge and has to start taking responsibility for their own future.

Jesus Almanara Rescalvo, a 16 year-old from Spain said "it is necessary that we make clear that people cannot be manipulated so easily, and that if the minority that holds power does not do a good job, the people can be very powerful."

In his message, the Secretary-General also noted that youth are a "transformative force; they are creative, resourceful and enthusiastic agents of change, be it in public squares or cyberspace."

Inhye Back, a 26 Year-old from the Republic of Korea highlighted the power of the internet and said that nowadays in Youtube or other social networks, young people are "sharing their thoughts with many people, even someone they don't know or they haven't met."

Marking the Day at UN Headquarters in New York, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has, over the past few days, been holding a series of six Google+ Hangouts on themes related to the priority areas of the Secretary-General's Five-year Action Agenda and the development of a UN System Wide Action Plan on Youth. These include employment; entrepreneurship; education, including on sexual and reproductive health; political inclusion; citizenship; and the protection of rights.

Each Hangout involves fie to six participants – ranging from United Nations experts, representatives of Member States, the private sector, academia and young people – and they are aimed at drawing attention to the issues, as well as exploring how the United Nations and civil society can partner with and for young people.
