"We are treating our ocean planet as both an endless resource and a garbage can. We've lost or fished out almost 60 percent of our world's total fish stocks. We dump almost one million pounds of plastics in our oceans every single hour of every single day. And things like the Gulf oil spill are a stark reminder that we have a lot of progress to be made, because we are poisoning the veins, the very life blood of our planet."

STORYLINE:

Over one thousand participants from all over the world are taking part of the event.

Among the guest speakers, ocean explorer and filmmaker Fabien Cousteau, grandson of explorer Jacques Cousteau, called for concerted action to protect the world's oceans.

Custeau said "we are treating our ocean planet as both an endless resource and a garbage can," adding that "things like the Gulf oil spill are a stark reminder that we have a lot of progress to be made, because we are poisoning the veins, the very life blood of our planet."

Youth Assembly alumnus Sam Vaghar, who is the founder of the Millennium Campus Network, rallied young people to be active in the causes they believe in.

He recalled his meeting with President Barack Obama and said he had told him "that he proved to our generation that anything is possible."

The conference is meant for young leaders who are aged between 18 and 26. The conference themes are social entrepreneurship and social leadership.
