STORYLINE:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (16 August) highlighted a new global initiative aimed at raising the importance of education.. 
Speaking to university students in Timor-Leste, Ban Ki-moon placed education as a top priority.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary General:
"We need today a bold new push for education."

The 'Education First' initiative will be officially announced in September, during the annual General Assembly in New York.

The Secretary-General recalled that the world has 775 million illiterate adults, 61 million children out of primary school and less than 40 percent of countries provide girls and boys with equal access to education.

Some goals of Education First include putting every child in school, improving the quality of education and fostering respect for human rights.

Ban was accompanied to Timor-Leste by his Special Envoy for Global Education, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Gordon Brown, and Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

On the second day of their visit, the delegation toured a local school and interacted with Timorese children from Liquiça, one of the country's districts.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has been working with the Timorese government and other partners to make education institutions more child-friendly. The agency has supported the construction of school buildings, training of teachers and parents, and provision of school materials, among other things.

In May, Timor-Leste celebrated its 10th anniversary of its independence in 2002.
