STORYLINE:

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the 13th anniversary of the Popular Consultation in which the Timorese people voted for independence,  Matan Ruak said that even when UNMIT's mandate ends later this year, Timor-Leste's partnership with the United Nations will go on.

He said "the United Nations has for the last 13 years accompanied and supported us in our tasks in State and Nation building" and the "experience, competence and sensitivity of many mission chiefs and envoys contributed to the results achieved."

Matan Ruak said his Government "will soon present a plan with the goals we see for a UN mission in the new circumstances arising from the latest elections".

The president highlighted the recent visit by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who said UN Peacekeepers were ready to leave the country.

He expressed confidence "that the new leadership of Timor-Leste will continue to move ahead towards further democratization, greater political stability, and greater participatory democracy in an inclusive way also taking care of the concerns and aspirations of the people."

On 30 August, 1999, a Popular Consultation led by the United Nations was held to define the future of Timor-Leste.

The option of remaining autonomous within Indonesia was ruled out and the Timorese voted for independence.
