STORYLINE:

Fifteen thousand refugees in South Sudan are having to move to higher ground after heavy rains turned parts of Jamam camp into swamps.

Moving around is not easy for Dawa Musa. She is frail and her eyesight is poor. Still when fighting broke out in her village in Blue Nile, Sudan, she had to flee.

Her 40-year-old son Awad Tungud carried her for two weeks. It was not an easy choice. Awad also had his wife and nine children to look after.

Awad and his family crossed the border into South Sudan at Elfoj.

They were received by UNHCR, and taken to Jamam refugee camp sixty kilometers away. They lived in safety in Jamam for seven months.

Then the rains came. Now the battle was against nature. Low lying parts of Jamam became swamps.

Health risks, particularly from water borne diseases were a serious threat to the refugees. Getting clean water to the area was increasingly difficult.

So relocating Dawa's family and thousands of other refugees to a new camp was urgently set up by UNHCR.

They came here to Gendrasssa, fifty-six kilometers from Jamam. Here the ground is higher and there is more vegetation.

Once again Awad carried his mother, this time to their new place of refuge. The family put up their tent, happy about the move.

In Gendrassa camp, Dawa was examined by medical doctors. Her condition was worrying, but stable.

This relocation process will move 15,000 refugees from Jamam to Gendrassa Camp.

Plans are being made for schools. The health post is doing outpatient nutrition for mothers and malnourished children. There is also a cholera treatment unit on standby – just in case there is an outbreak.
 
All this is to provide better living conditions for the thousands of Sudanese refugees who have found themselves far from their home.
