"My name is Youssouf Disa, I'm 12 years old and I'm in fourth grade. At school, we've learnt the importance of clean water for hygiene. We've learnt that we have to wash our hands before we eat. We've also learnt all about protecting water sources. And all of these things are important in preventing diseases."

"When I came home I spoke to my grandfather and my grandmother and explained what I had learnt at school, especially the importance of washing one's hands before eating."

"Before we had a lot of health problems. We didn't know we needed to wash our hands with soap before eating. We just used plain water. We were transmitting germs with our hands."

STORYLINE:

A program supported by UNICEF and partners is hoping to bring clean water and improved sanitation facilities to more than a half million children across Mali.

SOUNDBITE (Senoufo) Youssouf Dissa, student:

We've also learnt all about protecting water sources. And all of these things are important in preventing diseases."

Youssouf is benefiting from the Dubai Cares Partnership for Wash-in-Schools in Mali

The program is bringing clean water and improved sanitation facilities to more than 500,000 children across Mali

Youssouf's school now has a new hand pump and separate latrines for boys and girls.

Youssouf is a member of the school's Hygiene Club responsible for maintaining the new facilities using hygiene kits supplied by Dubai Cares

"Every morning the first thing we do when we get to school is sweep the yard and clean the latrines."

"We then clean the water pots before filling them. We also look out for children who come to school unwashed and they get fined 25 francs."

Hand washing with soap is now part of this family's daily routine.

And the well bucket now hangs on a hook to protect it from dirt.

Children have become agents of change.

Youssouf is also part of the school's Children's Government who meet with the community to get their support.

Through simple and cost-effective interventions, children in vulnerable communities have been empowered to lead healthier lives.

More than 960 schools throughout Mali are participating in the program.
