JORDAN / SYRIA REFUGEES

The UN refugee agency said on Tuesday that arrivals from Syria to the Za’atri camp in the north ofJordanhas doubled in the past week. The UN refugee agency said on Tuesday that the pace of arrivals from the Syrian border to the Za'atri camp in the north of Jordan has doubled in the past week.   A UN Children's Fund video team, in the camp earlier this month, showed that conditions were difficult even then, for some 7,000 refugees there at the time, mostly women and children.  
 
 
The harsh desert conditions impose themselves on the camp.  Refugees are battered with frequent sand storms, hot weather and lack of natural shade.

Umm Karam, 24 years old came from Daraa with her husband and two children, she says they went through a tough journey only to find themselves at difficult conditions in the camp

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Umm Karam, refugee, mother of two:

UNICEF and its partners are working hard to meet the humanitarian needs of the thousands of women and children at Za'atri camp

UNICEF leads efforts aimed at providing drinking water and supporting the site's water, sanitation and hygiene infrastructure.  Permanent latrines, bathing facilities and washing basins, as well as mobile units were installed.

Ten-year-old Rouba, walked for three hours with her family crossing the borders, she says they were forced to leave because of the bombing

Rouba now goes to the child friendly spaces and play grounds designated by UNICEF, in partnership with Safe the Children International and Mercy Corps.  Children receive psychosocial support, recreational activities and informal education services.

Belal, 12 years old, also came from Daraa with his four brothers and sisters, Belal says he enjoys the time he spends at the Child Friendly Space.

With the increasing number of Syrian refugees crossing to Jordan, there is a pressing need for expanding services in an attempt to meet the basic needs of the refugees and alleviate their suffering.
