With tropical storm Isaac heading towards Haiti the government today (24 August) is attempting to evacuate as many as possible of the 300,000 people still living in tent camps since the 2010 earthquake. MINUSTAH

23. SOUNDBITE (English) Kristine Parco, House program manger for International Organization for Migration (IOM), Haiti: 
"We are expecting the hurricane Isaac to arrive early tomorrow. And the rain will start this late afternoon until early evening. So upon the request of the government on the preparedness for the hurricane, we are supporting the government's initiative to evacuate the IDPs that are considered to be vulnerable, from the camps to here."

STORYLINE:

With tropical storm Isaac heading towards Haiti, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe announced an aggressive campaign to relocate the 300, 000 people who are still living in tent camps since the 2010 earthquake. 
 
In the Tabarre area of Port-au-Prince, the first group of dozens of internally displaced people of Carradeux camp agreed to be evacuated to a local school.
 
SOUNDBITE (Creole) Mamoune Amazan, displaced person: 
"Yes, I am scared because if the wind is blowing too hard, it could destroy my tent and the rain can harm my babe. That's why I accepted to come here."

Some 1 250 temporary shelters are available, the government said.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kristine Parco, House program manger for International Organization for Migration (IOM), Haiti:

The Government plans to evacuate habitants from 18 camps.
