STORYLINE:

Located within Cite Soleil, one of the biggest slums in Haiti's capital Port au Prince, Drouillard is a small community where a new low cost energy project begun some month ago.

The United Nations Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) together with the Brazilian Battalion and the Non-Governmental Organization 'Viva Rio' have been installing biodigestors in public toilet areas throughout Port au Prince and now it was Drouillards turn.

The system is quite basic and simple to handle, it requires little infrastructure: toilets linked to a sealed, brick-lined well connected to a basin. The tank called biodigestor receives the human excrement; deprived of air, the bacteria thriving in human excrement eat 85 per cent of the refuse while producing methane gas.

The system provides a solution to simply and efficiently treat human excrement, a major problem in the squalid tent cities that sprung up after the devastating January 2010 earthquake.

The project is also proving free energy to more than 100 families living with less than U$ 1 per day in Drouillard. Now up to 5 families have daily access to free food while utilizing the community kitchen.

The kitchen is provided with methane gas through pipes receiving the gas from the biodigestor.

Guerda Prezandieu's is thrilled to have the possibility to cook in the community kitchen for her children.

The Brazilian Peacekeeping battalion was involved in the project from the beginning and they also brought 'Viva Rio" NGO into the scene.

One of the main points of this project for the Brazilian military is that now there is less troublemaking in the streets.

The 'Viva Rio' NGO has installed around 80 biodigestor tanks in the country and the majority in Cite Soleil.
