STORYLINE:

The United Nations Humanitarian Chief, Valerie Amos this week visited Eastern DRC's North Kivu Province where nearly a quarter of a million people have been displaced by conflict since April this year. Another 57,000 people have fled to neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda since the beginning of 2012. 
  
Amos visited displaced communities in Kibati and Kanyaruchinya, outside Goma, the capital of North Kivu. She saw how years of violence have affected hundreds of thousands of people in the region. In recent weeks, some 30,000 people have fled clashes between the Congolese army (FARDC) and armed groups, and have sought refuge in the area. 
 
In North Kivu Amos met Vice Governor, Feller Lutaichirwa, and other officials and discussed the urgent need for food, health care and shelter in displaced communities.  Talking to reporters there she said that she was concerned at the increase in the numbers of people who had been displaced as a result of the recent conflict.

According to OCHA the current relief efforts are hampered by lack of funding. Of the $791 million needed this year to respond to the humanitarian challenges in the DRC, only $341 million have been received.
