STORYLINE:

American physician Jim Yong Kim took over as president of the World Bank Group in Washington D.C., today. He replaces Robert B. Zoellick.  
  
The Executive Directors of the World Bank Group selected Dr. Jim Yong Kim as President for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2012.

Upon arrival, Kim told reporters that throughout his career "working in some of the poorest communities in the world" he has learned that the World Bank "is the most important development institution in the world."

He said that he was "both humbled and inspired to take over today as President."

Kim was President of Dartmouth College and is a co-founder of Partners in Health (PIH) and a former director of the Department of HIV/AIDS at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Born in 1959 in Seoul, South Korea, Kim moved with his family to the United States at the age of five and grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. Kim graduated magna cum laude from Brown University in 1982. He earned a medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1991 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University in 1993. He is married to Dr. Younsook Lim, a pediatrician. The couple has two young sons.
