This award ceremony reflects a decision adopted by the UNESCO Executive Board in 189EX decision 21 and drawn on in the 2008 180EX decision 57 to create the prize."

"The International Award UNESCO / Equatorial Guinea against the ill-fated scenario of the actual pandemics and the global bio diversity threats, for us is no more than just the example of the extension of a humanitarian hand from Equatorial Guinea to the international world, against the different circumstances that continuously affect our planet and threat millions of human lives and other live beings. This is the true reason and the justification for this award for which initiative and in the name of Equatorial Guinea, his Excellency the president of the Republic Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo proposed the UNESCO for its noble objective without any political connotation."

STORYLINE:

UNESCO today awarded its Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences to scientist from Egypt, Mexico and South Africa. The prize rewards individuals, institutions, or organizations for scientific research in the life sciences that improve the quality of human life.

UNESCO listed the laureates as:

Dr. Maged Al-Sherbiny of Egypt, President of the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM S&T Centre) and President, Academy of Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), recognized for his scientific efforts and contributions concentrate on combating endemic diseases in Egypt and Africa through intensive research for vaccine development and diagnostics, targeting the diseases Hepatitis C and Schistosomiasis.

Dr. Rossana Arroyo of Mexico, Professor at the Centre for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN). Arroyo stands as one of the leaders in the study of molecular pathogenesis of trichomonosis in Mexico. Her research will help improve human life by controlling amoebiasis and trichomonosis, two parasitic diseases that still afflict human populations worldwide.

Dr. Felix Dapare Dakora of South Africa, Professor and Holder of the South African Research Chair in Agrochemurgy and Plant Symbioses at Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. He has contributed to building local capacities in agriculture thereby tackling the issue of food scarcity in Africa.

The prize winners were recommended to the Director-General of UNESCO by an international jury.
