UN / BULGARIA ATTACK

After the Security Council today condemned Wednesday’s attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria, Israeli Ambassador Haim Waxman told reporters “the fingerprints are very clear: the hand of Iran and Hezbollah are all over this attack”.

STORYLINE:

The UN Security Council today (19 July) condemned "in the strongest terms the terrorist attack" on a bus carrying Israeli tourists in Bulgaria Wednesday.

In a statement read out to the press by Ambassador Nestor Osorio of Colombia, which holds the Council's presidency for this month, the 15-member body expressed its deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the victims of this "heinous" act and to their families.

Israeli Ambassador Haim Waxman told reporters that it was no coincidence the incident occurred exactly 18 years after 85 people were killed in an attack on a Jewish community center in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, for which Iran has been blamed although it denies any involvement.

Noting that attacks and attempted attacks against Israeli and Western targets have been mounting in recent months, Waxman said "there's a clear line of terror that runs from Argentina to Bulgaria, which begins and ends in Iran".

Asked about the perpetrators of the attack in Bulgaria, the ambassador said the investigation was ongoing but "we know the fingerprints are very clear: the hand of Iran and Hezbollah are all over this attack".
