"Sports have a significant role to play in helping a post-conflict society transform into a peaceful society. Sports benefit mental health, through physical fitness, social interaction and making time to play. Also sporting heroines and sporting heroes are very positive role models for a new generation. They promote gender inclusion, and promote sports as an alternative to violence."

STORYLINE:

Juventina and Augusto are the only athletes set to represent Timor-Leste in the world's most spectacular sports event, the summer Olympic Games. They both qualified to run the full marathon.

London will be a first for 24-year old Juventina, who said she feels "happy and proud" to have qualified and to "carry the flag and the name of Timor-Leste in London."

More experienced, Augusto just hopes to cross the finish line. He went to Beijing four years ago – but didn't complete the 42 kilometres circuit.

He wants to "show the world that though we are a young nation we live in peace and harmony."

Their preparation occurs in exhausting heat at the National Stadium in the capital Dili. They have been training for just over a month.

Sports for peace and development have been one of Timor's goals with the support of the United Nations mission in the country.

Stephen Malloch of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) highlighted the value of sport and said that "sporting heroines and sporting heroes are very positive role models for a new generation" as they "promote gender inclusion, and promote sports as an alternative to violence."

For these two Timorese, hope relies on talent. Juventina and Augusto are Olympic mates. They run side-by-side, under one single flag.
