"This trip, which is my second trip to Syria, is intended in the framework of the resolution the security council adopted last week, Resolution 2059, which renewed the mandate of UNSMIS for a final period of 30 days unless there are significant developments regarding the level of violence and the use of heavy weapons. So we have to assess the situation with the whole team here and this is also an opportunity to introduce the new leadership of the United Nations Supervision Mission to Syria, Lieutenant General Gaye, who is arriving tonight and will take over to replace General Robert Mood."

STORYLINE:

The top United Nations peacekeeping official arrived today in Damascus where he will asses the situation as the observer mission (UNSMIS) begins its final 30-day mandate under a new leadership.

Hervé Ladsous, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, met with Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister, Faisal Mikdad, upon a rival and then offered a brief press conference.

The Under-Secretary-General said the current mandate will not be further extended "unless there are significant developments regarding the level of violence and the use of heavy weapons."

More than 10,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed and tens of thousands displaced since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began some 16 months ago.
