STORYLINE:

This is what Juba city, the capital of South Sudan now looks like on a regular day – traffic jams, businesses sprouting on almost every street corner, police patrols, new buildings being constructed and people going about their business.

A few years ago, the streets were not this busy. But in the last year the town has grown tremendously despite numerous challenges the country has experienced.

The city has attracted both citizens and foreigners alike, as have many other towns across South Sudan.

Markos ice-cream store sells cakes, popcorn, and of course ice cream. The shop has been operating since February 2010, and has become increasingly profitable by drawing mostly youthful clients.

Amule Moses, who works here, has lived in Juba for the last ten years.

A short drive away from Markos Ice Cream, this building, still under construction, houses a hardware store on the ground floor.

William KueiLouny has been working here for the last year and a half. The business he and his colleague are operating is well-stocked and seems to be making huge sums of money for the budding entrepreneurs.

The shop sells anything from car-tires to air-conditioners.

Life may not look so rosy for millions of other South Sudanese, many of whom continue to struggle due to conflict, lack of jobs, poverty or many who have just arrived in South Sudan. But entrepreneurs like William and Amule seem to be enjoying the first fruits of independence.
