"I notice my brother on the other side and he told me, 'look at me, grab a kid, you are going to jump this wall and when you jump this wall cross this road. Do not under any circumstances go up this street or down the street, just cross the road and I'll get you.' And, I don't know, I guess being a kid, when I jumped and I was carrying a little girl I start walking and he was screaming 'no, no, come this way', and as soon as I rolled over I noticed the bullets were flying and they were hitting the spots where I was standing with the kids."

"Now I was really terrified because as I was watching the people crawl to this field I noticed the bullets fly coming from (…), and literally picking up the grass and the ground."

STORYLINE:

The start of presentation of evidence in the Ratko Mladić trial began today (9 July) in the Hague with testimony from Elvedin Pašić, who was 14 years-old in 1992.

Pašić described what he said was the destruction and wilful damage of residential property, attacks on villages, the persecution of non-Serbs, beatings, killings and the brutal and inhumane conditions at the Grabovica school detention facility.

His village was shelled and the villagers fled to Plitska and other surrounding villages, on the way they had to avoid shooting from the snipers.

He described the attempts by villagers to protect themselves and the generally terrible conditions. He testified that refugees from attacked villages were moving from one place to another.

In October 1992 all refugees from Hrvaćani were instructed to move to Večići, but they had to get travel documents first from the Bosnian Serb authorities in Vrbanjci.

After 4 days in Večići he left with a group of fighters together with women and children. They were ambushed and during the fighting many men were killed. They surrendered and were detained in the Grabovica School. He describes beatings by the Bosnian Serb soldiers. He said  men of fighting age were separated from women and children; the men remained at the school and have never seen again. He said he was allowed to leave as he was regarded as a child.
