The Joint Special Envoy for Syria has been undertaking intensive consultations with a number of governments in the past couple of days, urging Security Council members to unite and to take concerted and strong action to stem the bloodshed in Syria and to build momentum for the much needed political transition.  Annan condemns bloodshed, condemns violence in all its forms, and the recent violence we have seen in Damascus only underscores the urgent need for decisive council action and we hope we see that today in New York.

It was postponed - Kofi Annan asked member states to delay the vote in order to give more time for consultations for the P3 and P2 in the hope that they can unite and find common language that will bring an end to the bloodshed.

STORYLINE

The Joint Special Envoy for Syria has called again today (19 July) for unity among the United Nations (UN) Security Council members and for decisive action on Syria in the Council's meeting in New York today.

The recent violence in Damascus, Annan's spokesman said, "underscores the urgent need for decisive Council action".

The meeting of the Council originally scheduled for yesterday (18 July) was postponed at Annan's request, Ahmad Fawzi said, to give more time for consultations in the hope that Members would unite and find a "common language" to end the bloodshed in Syria.
