STORYLINE:

The security situation has remained uncertain in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, as the M23 has issued threats to take the city if the Government does not negotiate with them.

The rebels left the Congolese armed forces, known as the FARDC, due what they claim to be mistreatment and poor working conditions as well as low pay.

The Uruguayan UN peace-keepers have been trying to secure Goma from any attack by the M23 rebel group.

Tensions have been high in Goma and residents are worried that things could get out of hand.

People in the streets blamed the government, Rwandans, and the UN for the situation.

Several armed groups roam freely in most parts of Eastern DRC. Among them, the FDLR (Democratic Force for the Liberation of Rwanda), who were involved in the Rwandan genocide in 1994. They escaped to Congo and have been involved in attacks in Rwanda.

The M23 renegade soldiers, who mutinied in April, are reportedly led by Bosco Ntaganda, an army general wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of war crimes for recruiting and using children in combat in the DRC's north-east in 2002-2003.

Along with the neighboring province of South Kivu in Eastern DRC, North Kivu province has witnessed increased fighting between Government troops and the M23, which has displaced more than 100,000 people, including many who have fled to neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda.
