As thousands of Syrian refugees flee to Lebanon, Turkey and Jordon, UNHCR calls for US$193 million to assist Syrian refugees this year. The revised appeal is a response to the growing numbers of people leaving the country. UNHCR

STORYLINE:

In Northern Lebanon's busy streets of Tripoli, UNHCR distributes humanitarian supplies to Syrian refugees. They have been arriving here and in Jordan and Turkey on a daily basis for months now.

Rima, as she wants to be called, rents this little house from a Lebanese family.
She fled Syria with her husband and three children.

"We couldn't believe that we arrived here alive, escaping the fighting over there. We got here with a lot of difficulty."

Across the region the refugee numbers are increasingly dramatically.

SOUNDBITE (English)  Panos Moumtzis, Regional Coordinator for Syrian Refugees:
"In the last three months we have seen a doubling of Syrian refugees and for the moment we foresee between now and the end of the year a continuous increase of the Syrian refugees." 
In Turkey, the government has assumed responsibility for the care and sheltering of the refugees. 
In Lebanon and Jordan, refugees rent rooms or move in with host families.

Hoda has been living with a family for almost a year.

"We're living here with them in their house. We're receiving some supplies, and the family is also assisting us, thank God, we're living. This remains better than the bombs over there."

Initially some refugees have to live on the street in makeshift shelters. UN agencies and NGOs are distributing food and blankets.And local governments are helping.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ali al Badawi, Mayor of Wadi Khaled:
"When the crisis in Syria began, and refugees starting coming in, the Lebanese community here was very willing to welcome the refugees. They looked upon the Syrians coming in as relatives. So they welcomed and housed them to prevent them from sleeping on the streets."

But much more help is needed. An interagency plan including seven UN agencies and over thirty NGO partners along with host governments has been put into place.

In Jordan, new camps are being prepared for the refugees. In Turkey, airlifts have brought in supplies.

In Lebanon refugees children are being helped to go to school. A coordinated interagency approach is seen as bringing more support and assistance to the Syrian refugees and the host countries.

To fund this relief plan, an appeal to raise around 190 million dollars is underway.
