"The members of the Security Council welcome the resumption of negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan under the auspices of African Union High Level Implementation Panel. They noted that there had been a reduction in violence in the border region and commended that some progress has been made by both parties in implementing the requirements of resolution 2046. However the members of the Security Council expressed their strong concern about delays and stressed that important elements of the resolution remained unresolved by both parties."

"We are very concerned about the suspension of the mission of observers in Syria and we believe that the parties, all parties in Syria should all offer full cooperation to the mission of observers in Syria and its very important for them to implement Kofi Annan's six point peace plan and also UN resolutions."

STORYLINE:

The United Nations (UN) Security Council said today (18 June) through a press statement read to the media by its President Chinese Ambassador Li Baodong that it would further examine a request for a UN mandate for the deployment of an African stabilization force to Mali, which has been beset by political instability and insecurity since earlier this year.

The President of the Security Council also read a statement issued by the Council welcoming the resumption of negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan under the auspices of African union High Level Implementation Panel.

However, Li Baodong said, the members of the Council expressed their strong concern about delays and stressed that important elements of the resolution "remained unresolved by both parties".

On Syria, Baodong expressed the Council's concern over the recent suspension of the UN observer mission in Syria. He said that it was very important for the parties to implement Kofi Annan's six point peace plan and also UN resolutions.

The Security Council is expected tomorrow (19 June) to hear a briefing from Major General Robert Mood on the situation in the country.
