STORYLINE:
 
More than 100 heads of state and government gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Wednesday (20 June) for the start of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which seeks to shape new policies to promote global prosperity, reduce poverty and advance social equity and environmental protection. 
 
Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in his remarks to the Plenary called for a change in the current global development plans and international order, saying that they were to blame for "the widening gap between North and South, various types of concerns worldwide including crises of identity and family, wars, occupations, animosity, continued arms race, financial crisis, the economic crisis and the declining moral standards and non-fulfilment of human aspirations." 
 
Dilma Rousseff, President of the host country Brazil said that sustainable development can help tackle a host of world problems as it "implies economic growth in order to distribute wealth" and means among other things "creating formal employment and expanding the workers agenda", putting an "end to extreme poverty", "guaranteeing access to education, health and social security", "making our cities more sustainable" and "generating clean energy."
 
French President François Hollande said that the current economic and financial crisis "is also an ecological crisis" and priority needs to be given to the environment and development."

Earlier in the afternoon, heads of state and high-level officials as well as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Nassir Abdualziz Al-Nasser got together to have a portrait taken as a historical visual document of the summit.

After intensive and protracted informal negotiations on how to accelerate the implementation of sustainable development, 191 countries reached agreement yesterday on the Conference's outcome document. The text will now be put forward for adoption by heads of state at the conclusion of Rio+20 on Friday. 
 
More than 40,000 people – including parliamentarians, mayors, UN officials, chief executive officers and civil society leaders – are attending Rio+20 from 20-22 June. The event follows on from the Earth Summit in 1992, also held in Rio de Janeiro, during which countries adopted Agenda 21 – a blueprint to rethink economic growth, advance social equity and ensure environmental protection.
