STORYLINE:

On the last day of the "Rio+20" United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Secretary-General of the Conference, Sha Zukang, today (22 June) announced the total number of registered commitments for sustainable development.

Zukang told a press conference that "Rio+20 is about implementation" and "about concrete action."

He said that the voluntary commitments registered "demonstrate that governments, the United Nations System and the nine major groups, are committed and serious about implementation" and "complement the official outcome of the conference."

The Rio +20 Secretary-General said that "the total figure is now six-hundred and ninety-two registered commitments" registered by governments, business, civil society groups, universities and others.

He noted that this brings the estimated total value of commitments to 513 billion US dollars for sustainable development, including in the areas of energy, transport, green economy, disaster reduction, desertification, water, forests and agriculture.

Zukang added that this was "a major achievement."

Over nine days (13 to 22 June), thousands of events were held in the lead-up to and during Rio+20  throughout Rio de Janeiro, including more than 500 official and side events at the Riocentro Convention Center, where the conference was held.
