PAKISTAN / NEW SCHOOLS

UNICEF, with Australian, Dutch and Pakistani support, has built 55 earthquake-resistant schools in northwest Pakistan areas devastated by quakes in 2005. Among the latest to be inaugurated is the GariHabibullah Government Primary School. UNICEF

"So what we see today in this very fine building and the enthusiasm of the students and teachers I think is cause for real optimism. There is a tremendous amount of very good work being done in the earthquake area by UNICEF with its international partners and of course with all the Pakistani partners."

"Another key factor for this school is the child-friendly learning which goes on. So it means a more active learning style for the kids. They learn together, they discuss, they support each other."

STORYLINE:

UNICEF, with Australian and Dutch support, has built 55 earthquake resistant schools in the northwest Pakistan areas devastated by quakes in 2005. Among the latest to be inaugurated is the GariHabibullah Government Primary School.

Another donor, the government of the Netherlands also met the children to see how their new surroundings are improving their educational prospects.

The guests also tried out the school's sanitary facilities and saw its environmentally friendly rainwater harvesting system.
