"There is a group of megatrends that are more and more interacting with each other, population growth and urbanization, but also climate change, probably the defining factor of our times, food insecurity, water scarcity, and they are interacting with each other, enhancing each other in a world that is smaller and smaller with physical limitations to economic growth, and they are forced to move, not only because natural disasters multiply, they become stronger, more dramatic, with huge, bigger humanitarian impact, but because of the slow onset of a certain number of other factors, drought, desertification, eventually in the future the rising levels of oceans, making human life in certain areas of the planet totally impossible and forcing them to flee."

"Migration is going to continue to occur primarily in the large cities of the world. This is the choice that migrants make today in order to find the jobs that they are going to need. Very often they are living in hazardous districts and often they are the last to be hired, the first to be fired and the last to be unionized."

STORYLINE:
 
The heads of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), António Guterres, and  the International Organization for Migration (IOM), William Swing, hosted a discussion on the vulnerability of migrants to climate change Wednesday (20 June) in Rio de Janeiro in the context of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). 
 
In his presentation Guterres stated that climate change, global warming and the resulting environmental pressures are among the defining challenges of our times and said that these factors place "physical limitations to economic growth" making "human life in certain areas of the planet totally impossible" and forcing people to flee.
 
Swing said that "migration is going to continue to occur primarily in the large cities of the world" as this is "the choice that migrants make today in order to find the jobs that they are going to need".
 
He said that migrants "are very often going to the more difficult jobs; they very often live in the worst areas, the most vulnerable to climate change" and "very often they are living in hazardous districts and often they are the last to be hired, the first to be fired and the last to be unionized.

Coinciding with the start of the high level meetings in Rio, the United Nations marked World Refugee Day on Wednesday by focusing on the more than 42 million people worldwide who have been forcibly displaced from their homes, and raising awareness of the dilemmas facing this vulnerable group of people.

Rio+20 brought together world leaders, government officials, the private sector and non-governmental organizations to discuss poverty reduction and advancing social equity, while preserving the environment.
