STORYLINE

On his last day (18 May) as President of Timor Leste, Jose Ramos Horta attended a medal ceremony held at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN) mission in the country, in the capital city of Dili.

SOUNDBITE (English) José Ramos Horta, President, Timor-Leste:
"I am very pleased to be here again as I have been here in numerous occasions in the last five years. I came here today to thank everybody from the UN family."

Four UN officials accepted the honours on behalf of the organization, including the head of the mission in Timor (UNMIT), the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ameerah Haq.

The event happened on the verge of Timor's 10th anniversary of the restoration of independence, celebrated on May 20.

The UN has been in the country for over a decade. The current mission, known as UNMIT, was established in 2006.
