STORYLINE:

On Sunday (20 May) the people of Timor-Leste celebrated the tenth anniversary of their country's restoration of independence. The celebrations also coincided with the inauguration of Timor-Leste's new President, Taur Matan Ruak, who won presidential elections last month.

Ambassadors from many countries, United Nations officials and Presidents of both Indonesia and Portugal participated in the event marking the tenth anniversary of Timor's Restoration of Independence.

A flag-raising ceremony commemorated the highest achievement for the Timorese people. Fallen heroes were honoured with a minute of silence, and military parade was held while the national anthem gained momentum at the presidential palace.

The opening of the Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum was also part of the celebrations. The Museum, originally created in 2005, features an archive with over 100,000 historical documents.

The new building includes material from the referendum supported by the United Nations and the Restoration of Independence – a decade ago.

Inaugurating the museum, President Taur Matan Ruak talked about the importance of passing on history to the next generation.

Outgoing President José Ramos-Horta expressed his pride over the conditions in which he handed over the country to the incoming president.

Special adviser Vijay Nambiar attended the event on behalf of Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Looking into the future, Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão talked about the priorities.

UNMIT was established by Security Council on 25 August 2006 in the wake of a major political, humanitarian and security crisis which had erupted in the country in April-May 2006. Among other things, the mission had been mandated to support the Government in "consolidating stability, enhancing a culture of democratic governance, and facilitating political dialogue among Timorese stakeholders, in their efforts to bring about a process of national reconciliation and to foster social cohesion."

UNMIT had replaced the UN Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL) which in turn was the latest in a series of successive United Nations operations or missions deployed in this country beginning in 1999. Timor-Leste became a sovereign State on 20 May 2002.
