RWANDA / NORTH KIVU VIOLENCE

For the past two weeks residents of North Kivu Province have been have been fleeing their homes following clashes between Ex-CNDP mutineers led my Bosco Ntakanda and the Congolese army. More than 7,000 Congolese refugees have arrived at Nkamira UNHCR transit camp some 25 kilometers from Gisenyi, a Rwandan border town. MONUSCO

STORYLINE:

People have been fleeing their homes following a recent upsurge in violence in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC); with clashes between former rebel mutineers led by Bosco Ntakanda and the Congolese army.

For the past two weeks, the population from different localities in the Territoire de Masisi, North Kivu Province have been escaping the fighting in the area and crossing into Rwanda.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other humanitarian agencies have set up emergency aid to assist the refugees, including an emergency response centre at Gisenyi on the Rwandan border to receive those arriving from the DRC.

UNHCR began the operation last Saturday, when a small pilot convoy of boats took 79 refugees from the town of Betou in north-eastern ROC to Dongo on the other side of the Oubangui River in the DRC. On Tuesday, a second convoy took a further 323 refugees from the Eboko site in the ROC across the river to Dongo.

Hundreds of army deserters led by the ex-general have clashed in recent days with loyalist soldiers in the eastern DRC town of Kimbumba in a conflict-torn region near the Rwandan border.

Ntaganda, nicknamed the "Terminator", is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes including recruiting child soldiers when he was part of a militia in the early part of the last decade.

More than 7,000 Congolese refugees have arrived at Nkamira UNHCR Transit Camp some 25 kilometres from Gisenyi. The number is expected to rise as more people are still crossing the border.

The Kivu provinces have been unstable for most of the past 20 years, with a myriad of armed groups preying on the civilian population, and regular massive displacements of tens of thousands of people.

The mutineers are former members of rebel group the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) who had been integrated into the army of the vast central African country under a 2009 peace deal.

The rebel soldiers complained of inhumane treatment in the regular army.
