"Youth have great hopes for the future – but they cannot survive on hopes. They need food, jobs and health care. They especially need reproductive health care. We cannot ignore the facts. Many young people are sexually active. And because of this, they may face risks to their health, including sexual violence. They need the information and means to protect themselves."

To prove that Young people when provided with skills and the support that they need can highly contribute to society, but it is not as simple especially when you Ladies and gentlemen do not recognize us as strategic partners. We frequently hear about meaningful youth participation, but your definition is different than ours. It is not enough for us just to be there. Young people must be taken into account in all phases of decision making that affect our life. To have a voice and to take up leadership roles, to address and promote the issues that matter the more to us. 'You are too young, you're experience is not enough' have become some of the wotrds that we usually hear. Active participation of young people will not work unless young people are considered as true partners."

STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the need to provide reproductive health care for young people, as well as give them access to the necessary information and the means to protect themselves from sexual abuse and violence.

Speaking today at a week-long session on the Commission on Population and Development at headquarters in New York, he said that youth have great hopes for the future, but that they cannot survive on hopes. "They need food, jobs and health care."

He emphasized the need youth have for reproductive health care. "We cannot ignore the facts that many young people are sexually active," he said, "they need the information and means to protect themselves."

UN population fund (UNFPA) Executive Director Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin said that the nexus between technology and youth is expanding the agency's ability to raise awareness, adding that "when it comes to sexual and reproductive health, awareness can spell the difference between life and death."

Noting that UNFPA was developing a new strategy to"sharpen" the focus on youth, he said that his agency was increasing sexual and reproductive health services and information, adding that "we are spreading success through networks of youth that span the world."

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015.
