"Critically the Security Council made clear that there will be consequences for any future North Korean launch or nuclear test. If North Korea chooses again to defy the international community then the council has expressed its determination to take action accordingly."

STORYLINE:

The United Nations (UN) Security Council today (16 Apr) strongly condemned the attempted launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) of a so-called 'application satellite,' stressing that last week's action, as well as any other use of ballistic missile technology, is a serious violation of the UN resolutions.
 
United States (US) Ambassador Susan Rice read a presidential statement issued by the Council, which demanded that the DPRK immediately "abandon all nuclear weapons and existing new nuclear programs in a complete verifiable and irreversible manner."

The Council also demanded that Pyongyang re-establish its commitments to a moratorium on missile launches.

Rice said that the Council had made it clear that there would be "consequences" for any future launches or nuclear tests and that if North Korea chose to again defy the international community then the Council has "expressed its determination to take action accordingly."

She said that the presidential statement also provided for new sanctions and that the Council had directed its North Korea Sanctions Committee to designate additional North Korean entities, including companies, to be subject to an asset freeze.
