UGANDA / NUTRITION

At an inter-parliamentary union (IPU) meeting in Kampala, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake appealed for the inclusion of nutrition security as an essential element of every national development plan. More than 600 parliamentarians from over 100 countries participated at the IPU Assembly. UNICEF

At the opening plenary session of the 126th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Kampala, Uganda, UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake appealed for the inclusion of nutrition security as an essential element of every national development plan.

More than 600 parliamentarians from over 100 countries participated at the IPU Assembly.
The IPU forms a critical UNICEF partner in mobilizing decision makers on behalf of the world's children.

On field trips, Parliamentarians were able to observe some of UNICEF's nutrition programmes first hand.

The children admitted to Mulago nutrition centre are severely malnourished. Once stablilsed and treated for acute malnutrition and other medical complications as a result of this, mothers are educated on good nutrition practices.

"I used to feed my baby late and wait for her to cry. But now I make sure to feed her in time."
Across town, Parliamentarians also visited Kisenyi health centre where they interacted with children and caregivers affected by malnutrition treated on an outpatient basis.

The message is loud and clear. Ending child under-nutrition is critical to achieving virtually all Millenium Development Goals by 2015.
