STORYLINE:
 
UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake, is now officially the 105,549th U-reporter in Uganda.

On his visit to the Treasure Life youth centre, members of the Uganda Scouts Association introduced Lake to the free SMS system that provides youth countrywide with a platform to share information about what is happening in their communities.

After interacting with members of the centre, Lake was introduced to the Digital Drum, a rugged solar powered computer kiosk that allows youth to access information.

Another innovation Lake observed, was the use of the Mobile Vital Records System (Mobile VRS) to register births of new born babies at Mulago Hospital.

But it was addressing under-nutrition and stunting that was at the heart of Lake's visit to Uganda.

National figures indicate that 33 per cent of children under the age of 5 are stunted as an effect of under-nutrition.

Lake visited the Mulago Nutrition clinic to observe the community based management of malnutrition services in Kampala.

Lake's address to the IPU Assembly in Kampala presented UNICEF with an excellent opportunity to appeal to influential decision-makers worldwide to include nutrition security on their agenda, in order to achieve virtually all the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
