STORYLINE:

Timor-Leste woke up early on Monday (16 April) for the second round of a presidential vote in which Francisco Guterres faced off against Jose Maria de Vasconcelos following the first round held on 17 March.

The country has over 600 thousand registered voters, many in the capital city of Dili.

For the United Nations, today's election was a great example of democracy in Timor-Leste.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ameerah Haq, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Timor-Leste:

In Timor, the indelible ink is the mark of those who voted.

Anita was not sure of her age, but proudly showed the symbol of her participation.

For some, voting means overcoming challenges. Abilio is a gifted table tennis champion. Today, he is also a very happy Timorese.

The country's National Police Commander monitored one of the polling centres.

Electoral assistance, institutional development and capacity-building of the PNTL are the main tasks the UN peacekeeping mission is responsible for until its expected departure on 31 December this year from the small Asian nation that the world body shepherded to independence in 2002.
