STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (27 April) praised India's economic development and called on the country to build on it by implementing policies that reduce inequalities among society and take into account environmental and social factors.

Ban arrived yesterday for a four-day visit to the country.

During his first two days in Delhi he held meetings with Foreign Minister H.E. Mr S. M. Krishna, Health Minister H.E. Mr Ghulam Nabi, and Prime Minister H.E. Mr Manmohan Singh.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, Ban discussed the role of the South Asian nation in the region, as well as the latest developments in peace and security in Syria. They also talked about the relationship between India and Pakistan and of ways to further the democratization of Myanmar, ahead of Ban's visit to the country on Sunday.

The Secretary-General proceeded to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the Jamia Millia Islamia University, and met with the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, Shrimati Sonia Gandhi.

During his visit to India Ban plans to see first hand the impact of the UN's global maternal health campaign - Every Woman Every Child. Tomorrow he heads to Mumbai where he will visit local health clinics and medical facilities.

At a press conference held at the UN House in Delhi, Ban said that he wanted to "highlight the important work India is doing to promote woman's and children's health" and looked forward to speaking with the staff and patients about their concerns.

On Syria, the Secretary-General told reporters that he was "gravely alarmed that despite repeated commitments to end violence, the killings continue without relent". He said UN military observers had reported the use of heavy weapons in populated areas, and added that "this is in clear contravention to what the Syrian government has already agreed".

Ban called for the continued repression of the civilian population to stop immediately. He said that the Syrian people had been "suffering too much, too long" and that the situation had "reached an unacceptable, intolerable stage".

Speaking about his upcoming trip to Myanmar, Ban said he was visiting "to recognize the significant progress that has been made on democratic reforms and national reconciliation efforts". He noted that although the international community was responding positively much more needed to be done, and said the UN was committed to helping maintain the momentum.
