"We need a structural and important investment and we wanted it now, because the situation in Tunisia is extremely fragile. People are getting, as I told you, impatient. We need to show them that the revolution can bring something to the people and we are expecting from the private sector, mainly from the private sector and governments like Qatar to come and I wouldn't say to rescue, because you have a different situation, but we rely on ourselves, but also on our friends."

"Tunisia has to succeed, because if Tunisia is a success story, that will give a good example for the whole Arab world. But if it doesn't work, people say look, okay, you have this revolution, your democratic values, but you are not able to feed your population, so it doesn't work - this would be a very, very bad message to the Arab world. This is why I am expecting full support from the democratic institutions, democratic countries and from the private sector, because I know that the private sector is not a philanthropic, but I know that they can do a lot in Tunisia."

STORYLINE:

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki called on the international community to support his country as it transitions to democracy, saying that the current situation in the North African nation is "extremely fragile."

In an interview with UNifeed during the United Nations (UN) Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD XIII) taking place in Doha, Qatar, Marzouki said that people in Tunisia are getting "impatient."

The Tunisian President said that there is a need to make the case "that the revolution can bring something to the people" adding that he expects "the private sector and governments like Qatar to come and I wouldn't say to rescue."

Qatar issued a loan for $500 million to Tunisia in a private placement this week, the Tunisian central bank said on Wednesday, to help government finances recover from last year's uprising.

The five-year loan carries an interest rate of 2.5 percent, the central bank said in a statement.

He argued that "if Tunisia is a success story, that will give a good example for the whole Arab world" but if it were to fail, "this would be a very, very bad message to the Arab world."

For this reason, Marzouki said that he expects "full support from the democratic institutions, democratic countries and from the private sector."

The conference discusses intergovernmental development efforts to increase trade between developing countries. Among issues discussed are: trade, transport, investment and finance, technology, and aid.

The 13th session, known as UNCTAD XIII and taking place in Doha from 21 to 26 April, is the first such conference since the fallout from the 2007-2008 global economic crisis. The sessions are held every four years, and the theme of this year's session is 'Development-centered globalization: Towards inclusive and sustainable growth and development.'

Established in 1964, UNCTAD promotes the development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy, and seeks to help shape current policy debates and thinking on development, with a particular focus on ensuring that domestic policies and international action are mutually supportive in bringing about sustainable development.
