STORYLINE:

UN Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Yemen Jamal Benomar said today that following its successful presidential elections, the country's political transition was moving forward.

He congratulated the country for its successful election, emphasizing that President Abbed Rabbo Mansour al-Hadi now has "a strong mandate to lead this transition."

He noted that turnout was much higher than expected and that many of the youth – who have been protesting the government – participated and voted for the new president.

He stressed that "the transition is on track," and was moving into its second phase, which would include the "organization of a national dialogue conference, constitutional reform, reform of the electoral system and then the major task of organizing general elections by the end of the transition period in two years time."

He cautioned that many economic, political and security challenges remained, however, pointing to "alarming developments in the south."

"There have been attacks on government forces, the death toll is rising," he said. "This is a stark reminder for all the Yemenis that there are security challenges that they will have to address during this period."

Warring factions in Yemen signed an agreement in November on a transitional settlement under which former president Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed to hand over power to Mr. Hadi, the then vice president, who was the sole candidate in February's presidential election.
