STORYLINE:

The International Monetary Fund said Thursday that a small team has held productive talks with the government and key political parties in Parliament to lay the ground for a potential program with the IMF.

"The mission had productive talks with the authorities and key political parties in Parliament," IMF spokesman David Hawley said.

The three-day talks were led by Masood Ahmed, Director of the IMF's Middle East and Central Asia Department. Hawley said the talks would pave the way for the arrival of a technical team that will work on the Egyptian government's national economic program that could be supported by the IMF.

"This is not a mission that ended in disagreement because there wasn't an intention during this mission to reach agreement on the program on either side," Hawley said.

The mission met with Speaker of parliament Saad El-Katatni, head of the Freedom and Justice Party Mohamed Mursi, deputy head of the Muslim Brotherhood Khairat El-Shater, representatives of other political parties, and parliament's economic and budget committees.
