STORYLINE:

UNICEF warned today that as many as 1.5 million children under the age of five are at risk of severe and acute malnutrition over the next six months in the 
Sahel region of Africa.

At a press briefing today in Geneva, UNICEF spokesperson Marixie Mercado said that earlier warnings on the crisis had been issued months ago but that comprehensive plans were in place for each of the affected countries.

Mercado also said that UNICEF had been able to stock and order ready to use therapeutic food which is a critical in the nutrition response to meet needs until the end of June, but said there was an urgent need of funds for other critical elements of the nutrition.
 
Poor rainfall and failed harvests are affecting an estimated 10 million people in the areas of Chad, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Northern Nigeria, northern Cameroon and parts of the north in Senegal.

The agency has received US$24 million in response to an emergency appeal for (USD)$119 million.
