STORYLINE:

After ten years in Afghanistan, UNAMA's new mandate calls for a shift in focus towards working more inclusively with the Afghan government and civil society. That was the message delivered today (28 March) at a press conference in Kabul by the Special Representative of the Secretary General in Afghanistan, Ján Kubiš.

Referring to the unanimous 22 March decision by the United Nations (UN) Security Council to extend UNAMA's mission for another year, Kubiš said he believes that the decision reflected "the changing realities in the country and also reflects the requirements of the society."

Kubiš elaborated several key priorities for the UN Mission in Afghanistan. He stressed that the organization would continue to promote peace and reconciliation, would continue its work coordinating international civilian efforts, and would provide more coherent support to the government.

He said that after 10 years since the first UNAMA mandate was endorsed, he saw a change of the focus of the work, a shift towards supporting sovereignty of Afghanistan, and a strong requirement towards United Nations to work "not as a sort of detached party but in support of the Afghan Government and the society of Afghanistan."
