STORYLINE:

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon together with Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) spent Saturday (25 February) visiting community sports projects in Lusaka, Zambia.

The delegation visit the Olympic Youth Development Centre in the northern outskirts of Lusaka.

The multi-purpose sports complex is a pilot project of the IOC's 'Sports for Hope' program and was inaugurated in May 2010. 
Following the unveiling of a plaque commemorating their visit to Zambia, both Ban and Rogge continued to a celebration at the Centres stadium.

Addressing the youth there Rogge took the opportunity to thank the Secretary-General and the organization for its "whole hearted support".  He said that the UN and the OIC shared the same philosophy, "the philosophy that sport is much more than athletic performance, that sport is a great educational tool, that sport fosters social integration, that sport brings health".

Ban said that sport went beyond excellence in games, "it provides healthy and positive lifestyle to all of you. Young people are top of my priority at the UN."

The objective of the IOC and the Zambian government is that the Olympic Youth Development Centre can offer athletes professional training opportunities while also offering a wide range of educational programmes, health services and community activities.
