ANGOLA / BAN PRESSER

Speaking to reporters today at Luanda’s airport, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that oil-rich Angola must do more to provide military assets and assistance to the UN’s peacekeeping missions throughout Africa and made a direct appeal for troops and air assets to Angola which is known to have one of the continents most powerful and well-trained armies. STORYLINE:

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that oil-rich Angola must do more to provide military assets and assistance to the United Nation's peacekeeping missions throughout Africa, making a direct appeal for troops and air assets to Angola which is known to have one of the continents most powerful and well-trained armies.

Speaking to reporters at Luanda's airport, Ban said that Angola once was the recipient of UN peacekeeping operations and that it was time they should contribute " proactively" to peace and security areas by contributing well trained and disciplined soldiers along with helicopters and other air assets.

Ban's visit to Angola comes as the country prepares to celebrate a decade since the end of its 27 year civil war. Thanks to oil and diamonds, Angola has enjoyed strong peacetime economic growth but many people still live in poverty without access to water or electricity.
