"I believe and hope that a new renaissance, educational, scientific and cultural can emanate from the inexhaustible resources of the human mind, the human brain; resources which belong in equal measures to Blacks and Whites, Asians and Europeans, Russians and Americans, Arabs and Israelis. If we can equip our young people with the treasures of modern knowledge, information and know-how, they will recover the audacity of our ancestors when they emerged from their dark caves. And with luck, they will open a new era of peace, tolerance and prosperity."

STORYLINE:

Samuel Pisar, a Polish-born Holocaust survivor and acclaimed international lawyer, author and human rights activist, was designated a UNESCO Honorary Ambassador and Special Envoy for Holocaust Education today (27 January).

The ceremony took place at UNESCO's Headquarters on the International Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust and was hosted by Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO.

In his acceptance speech, Pisar expressed hope for a future in which through education and knowledge, humanity can overcome many of today's challenges.

Pisar was granted American citizenship by a special Act of Congress in 1961. Apart from his professional activities at the American, French and British bars, he is a board member of various public interest organizations, a trustee of Washington's Brookings Institution, president of Yad Vashem France, as well as a director of the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoahand Israel's Institute of Technology.
