"Although we hope this will not happen, we need to be prepared and do our part. We are already working on it. We will cut excesses in our bureaucracy, look for ways we can make travel less costly, make better use of information technologies and cut special benefits for top management, including the Director-General.

STORYLINE:

The Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) new Director-General José Graziano da Silva at his inaugural press conference Tuesday said the total elimination of hunger and undernourishment from the world will be his top priority. 
While reminding that ending hunger required the commitment of everyone, da Silva said he was convinced that there was an opportunity to regain lost ground and make progress towards achieving the first Millennium Development Goal of halving the proportion of people living in hunger and extreme poverty by 2015. 
He also told journalists that with a term in office of only three and a half years there was no time to lose.
The Director-General also emphasized that he would strive to make FAO more effective and responsive by administrative cost-cutting and efficiency gains.

He said that efficiency savings would not cut into FAO's technical work and he would try to use them to strengthen the Organization's direct assistance to countries.
