The majority of Haitians living in the Dominican Republic are stateless. Those who are born there have neither a Haitian nor Dominican passport, most of them are illegal and work in the batey or sugar cane plants. Now UNHCR along with a local NGO are to help Haitians become legal and to integrate them into the Dominican society by providing them with Spanish language classes and income generating jobs.
