"Protection area is an isolated area; it is an area which has been designed by UNHCR to accommodate persons facing eminent insecurity inside the camp, from the communities where they have been placed. This is an area located near a police station. It is an area which is manned by security from LWF so the gate is always manned by a security officer to monitor who is coming in and out of the camp."

"I have been here for almost eleven years. I have been staying here; I don't know where I belong to, because now I can't call myself Sudanese. I don't want; even I don't want to call myself Sudanese. So, I've lived here and I will not go back, I will stay here with my mom."

"Yes, Sudan is now independent and peaceful after they voted for the referendum. But the peace they have is theirs.  It's them who will enjoy it, not me. I will die here."

STORYLINE:

Kakuma Camp, in Kenya, is home to thousands of refugees.

Within Kakuma, a section of the camp has been set up a special protection area by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

More than 378 people from six nations live here. UNHCR provides them a safe haven for their own protection as they all have been targeted.

Susan's family was from South Sudan, but her father was a soldier in the Northern army. For this, she says, he was killed by southern forces, as she watched.
 
Having married one of her father's army colleagues, she too was accused of being a traitor, beaten and raped. She fled to Kakuma.

Karen Bitok is a legal officer in UNHCR Kakuma Camp.

Susan's 19 years old son, Serbit Emmnuel, was born in South Sudan, but his family's legacy haunts him too.

The end of the civil war and recent independence of South Sudan has not changed this family's fate.

Accusations that Susan's husband and father killed many Southern Sudanese have not been forgotten or forgiven. Susan and her three children don't dare return home.

More than anything Susan wishes that her children could start a new life somewhere else; Ethiopia or South Africa she says. For herself she holds out little hope.
