"I couldn't lift my feet and my arms, all my veins were heavy. Now, I am feeling so light that I can prevent all kicks that could knock me down. If someone is sitting and a fight starts, he could become a victim. But now with these movements, I can do a "salto" to defend myself against any kind of attack. I can also help someone else."

STORYLINE:

Korean peacekeepers in Leogane, 25 kms west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, are using their know-how and materials in different areas such as engineering, maintenance and infrastructure, while executing projects for the community.

While these are big projects, they are also providing a cultural function by teaching schoolchildren the practice of Taekwondo, a Korean traditional martial art aimed at strengthening both body and soul.

About 350 students signed up to participate in the Taekwondo class, but the criteria for selection was quite strict: Only these 60 students who excelled in school academics were qualified for this course.

The students started the course in October and twice a week during the following four months they have been training with these Korean military teachers in order to get the grade of the black belt.

Taekwondo is a sport that uses feet and fists and some accessories such as these knock rackets in order to learn precision and power.

Like all sports, Taekwondo provides healthy exercise. It develops suppleness and coordination.

As all martial arts, this sport provides its user with self-control and it is a powerful self-defence tool.

Taekwondo is also an Olympic sport and it can be practiced from a young age.

In order to learn, children need to repeat the movements over and over. The result is a balanced position, concentration, speed and coordination. A Taekwondo man (or woman) is always ready.
