STORYLINE:

A new United Nations (UN) report said that global progress in both preventing and treating HIV emphasized the benefits of sustaining investment in HIV/AIDS over the longer term. 
The latest report by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and UNAIDS "Report on the Global HIV/AIDS Response" indicated that increased access to HIV services resulted in a 15 percent reduction of new infections over the past decade and a 22 percent decline in AIDS-related deaths in the last five years.

Gottfried Hirnschall, Director of WHO's HIV Department said that "in 2011 we have seen unprecedented progress in the area of HIV".

Hirnschall said that one in two persons requiring antiretroviral treatment (ART) now had access to it. He added that "nearly fifty percent of women, pregnant women now have the means to protect their unborn babies".

The report acknowledged that investment in HIV services could lead to total gains of up to 34 billion dollars by 2020 in increased economic activity and productivity, more than offsetting the costs of ART programs.

Still Hirnschall expressed concerned over remaining "challenges". He said that one of the biggest worries currently was that there was a decrease in global funding.

"It has taken us ten years to get to this moment. Now is the time to really believe and be convinced of getting ahead of the curve", Hirnschall said.

The report also pointed out to the fact that more than half of the people who need antiretroviral therapy in low-and middle-income countries are still unable to access it, and many of them are unaware that they have HIV.

Hirnschall said that on World AIDs Day 2011, "we must remember that we have the opportunity to overcome the epidemic. We must not loose this momentum."
