ANGOLA / 7 BILLION

On the streets of the capital city the scene is chaotic and the notorious Luanda traffic jams bear evidence to a country unable at present to cope with a growing population of some 19 million people, almost half of whom are under the age of 18. For the last ten years, Angola has focused on rebuilding itself after decades of civil war and despite the visible development taking place, reconstructing the systems that form the foundation of a country's social services is proving harder to build. STORYLINE
 
Almost a decade after the end of a brutal 27-year civil war, Angola is trying to catch up with its rapidly growing population –more than half of which is under the age of 18.

With one of the highest birth rates in the world today, the country is struggling to provide basic necessities like clean water, sanitation, healthcare and education to its people

While Angola's vast oil wealth is leading to visible development, its social services remain weak and reconstructing those systems is proving to be hard

Many children under five haven't even been registered

SOUNDBITE (English) Edina Kozma, UNICEF Chief of Child Protection, Angola:
"The war has destroyed the data that was previously registered in the registration book. Also, there is a movement of the population that basically redesigned the density of Angola."

This is the third day Inha Antonio has come to register her 5 month-old son, Armando. While the process has taken long, she says it's worth the wait.

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Inha Antonio, Mother:
"It is very important because for school as well, when he needs to go to school the document is important."

Armando will finally get his birth certificate.

But this is the first of many challenges that lie ahead.

The next will be an education.

These make-shift outdoor classes are evidence of a system unable -- at present -- to cater to the millions of children eager to study

Angola's population of nearly 19 million people will grow at around three per cent every year. The government is working hard to reclaim lost years.

But the question is, will the country be able to develop fast enough for its youth, waiting to benefit from being born into one of Africa's richest nations?
